Spiritual Practice: Sufi Music

The minstrels play music from within;
whole oceans of passion foam
on the crest of their waves.
- Rumi

Essential to the Sufi Path is the Sufi spiritual concert, sama, which literally means "hearing". In the terminogy of Sufism, it is listening with the ear of the heart to music in the most profound sense--poetry melodies, tunes and rhythimic harmonies--while being in a special state so deeply plunged in love that there is no taint of self left with in awareness.

For Sufism in Boston, the Nimatullahi Sufis practice sama on Thursday and Sunday evenings.

Interestingly in Judaism one of the greatest commandments known as the "Shema" (sounds similar to Sama - probably both from same semitic root) is to "hear" or "listen".

שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל הַשֵּׁם אֱלֹקינוּ הַשֵּׁם אֶחָד

'Shema Yisrael HaShem Elokeinu HaShem Echad'

Shema - listen or hear, Yisrael - Israel (in the sense of the people or congregation of Israel), HaShem - [the] Lord, Elokeinu - our God, HaShem - [the] Lord, Echad - [is] One.

Or commonly rendered as “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God! The Lord is One!”

Dear Brooklyn,

Thank you for the beautiful Shema, truly a prayer that we should all understand and hear.

Ya Haqq (Oh Truth!)
